Trigger Point Injection, or TPI, is a treatment used at Colorado Joint and Spine Institute to alleviate pain from a tight or spastic area of a muscle that does not relax. These knots irritate and inflame nerves causing referred pain to other areas of the body.
Trigger points may result from injury, trauma, or a chronic overuse situation. Sitting at a desk for long periods, when combined with poor posture, can lead to the development of trigger points. Trigger points are also commonly associated with stress. Nearly any physical, chemical or emotional stress may result in a trigger point.
A small needle, which in some cases contains medication, is inserted into the trigger point. The knot is rendered inactive and the pain and irritation is alleviated.
Multiple areas may be injected in one visit. The procedure itself takes only minutes to perform. We use TPI only as part of a solution to correct an underlying problem. The goal is to get you out of pain as quickly as possible so that you may begin a therapy program to sustain long term relief and optimal health.
